There are rumors suggesting that Yaroslav Askarov is potentially available for trade, and on draft day, there were difficulties in arranging a trade involving a top-five pick. The reported requirement for the trade is either an “established NHL player, or a prospect with a high ceiling.”
So, what would the Blue Jackets need to offer to acquire Askarov? Would Don Waddell consider trading Kent Johnson and Daniil Tarasov for Yaroslav Askarov? Waddell is known for being open to making trades, and given the uncertainty surrounding the goalie position, this trade could address that uncertainty.
Even though Daniil Tarasov finished the year strongly, there are lingering doubts about his ability to be a primary goalie. He has one year remaining on his current contract with an average annual value of $1,050,000, after which he will become a restricted free agent.
Kent Johnson experienced a challenging second season, with injuries, performance slumps, and demotions to the AHL, only managing 16 points in 42 games for Columbus. Despite this, experts believe that Johnson’s potential is higher than what he’s shown so far. There’s also uncertainty about whether he is best suited for center or wing, especially with the recent addition of Sean Monahan and other talents in the team. Yaroslav Askarov boasts a record of 56-29-6 with the Milwaukee Admirals and a 0.911 save percentage. In 17 Calder Cup Playoff appearances, he has an 8-9 record with a 0.893 save percentage. He is highly regarded as the top prospect for the Predators and is expected to command a top prospect in return. Askarov will be a restricted free agent after the next season.
The Blue Jackets have the resources to make such a move. The question is whether Don Waddell or Predators GM Barry Trotz would consider it. With the Predators committing to Saros with an 8-year deal, there is pressure to make a decision regarding Askarov. The team’s recent moves suggest a focus on winning in the coming years.
