The 31-year-old reliever entered the game after starter Kyle Hendricks exited due to lower back tightness, pitching for 0.2 innings. However, Brewer had a tough time on the mound, giving up three runs (one earned run) along with two hits and two walks.
This performance was a stark contrast to his earlier showing against the Philadelphia Phillies earlier in the week, where he only allowed one earned run along with three hits and struck out three batters over two innings of relief.
The Cubs were already dealing with bullpen challenges as reliever Yency Almonte had been placed on the 60-day injured list due to season-ending right shoulder surgery announced the previous day. As if that wasn’t enough, Brewer’s hand injury from punching a dugout wall seems to epitomize the Cubs’ luck this season.
Despite these setbacks, there is hope that 26-year-old Hunter Bigge, who has performed well in Triple-A this season, could bring some much-needed energy to the bullpen.
