Cubs, White Sox Among Teams Interested in Angels Starter Reid Detmers
The Cubs and White Sox are reportedly among the clubs exploring a trade for Angels left-hander Reid Detmers, according to Yahoo! Sports’ Russell Dorsey. As one of the top controllable starting pitchers available, Detmers has likely drawn interest from numerous contenders ahead of the trade deadline.
After moving to the bullpen in 2025, the former top-10 draft pick has successfully reestablished himself in the Angels’ rotation. Though his career has been marked by inconsistency, Detmers has emerged as a dependable mid-rotation arm this season, posting a 4.05 ERA in 21 starts while striking out 28% of opposing hitters and lowering his walk rate to a career-best 7.5%.
His performance has improved notably since the All-Star break, highlighted by two strong outings against the Tigers and Cardinals. Across those starts, he has allowed just one run over 11⅓ innings while recording 13 strikeouts and only two walks.
Detmers remains under team control through the 2028 season via arbitration and is earning $2.625 million this year, making him an attractive trade target due to both his affordability and long-term value.
The Angels could seek a significant return—potentially multiple top-100 prospects—for Detmers. With interim general manager John Mozeliak overseeing the deadline, recent reports suggest Los Angeles is more willing than in previous years to discuss players under long-term control. Along with fellow starter José Soriano and shortstop Zach Neto, Detmers represents one of the organization’s most valuable trade assets and could help replenish the Angels’ farm system if they choose to pursue a larger rebuild.
The Cubs have long been searching for rotation help after injuries sidelined several starters, including Cade Horton, Justin Steele, Edward Cabrera, and Ben Brown. Following their move away from Jameson Taillon, Chicago’s current rotation features Matthew Boyd, Shota Imanaga, Colin Rea, and David Peterson. Detmers would provide another high-quality option near the top of the staff.
The White Sox are also viewed as a logical fit. Despite leading the AL Central by 2.5 games over Cleveland and holding a strong position for a first-round playoff bye, Chicago’s rotation has been inconsistent. Sean Burke has been dominant since early June, but Davis Martin has struggled after a strong start. Anthony Kay and Erick Fedde have filled back-end roles, while top prospect Noah Schultz has yet to find consistent success in the majors. Recently acquired José Urquidy adds depth but is not considered a frontline solution.
Because the White Sox appear to be entering a multi-year competitive window, acquiring a controllable starter like Detmers may be more appealing than pursuing a short-term rental. Although they have also been linked to Mets starter Clay Holmes, who is expected to opt out after the season, Chicago is believed to prefer players who can contribute beyond 2026. In addition to starting pitching, the White Sox are also seeking bullpen reinforcements and catching depth after Kyle Teel suffered an ankle injury expected to keep him out until September.
