Dick Van Arsdale, a three-time NBA All-Star and the first player ever selected by the Phoenix Suns in the 1968 expansion draft, has passed away at the age of 81.
The Suns confirmed Van Arsdale’s death in a statement on Monday, stating that the news was relayed by his family. The cause of death has not been disclosed.
Van Arsdale, standing at 6-foot-5, began his NBA career with the New York Knicks before joining the Suns. He was an All-Star in each of his first three seasons with Phoenix, posting a career-high 21.9 points per game during the 1970-71 season. He was also a key player for the Suns’ 1976 team, which made it to the NBA Finals, though they were defeated by the Boston Celtics. Van Arsdale retired in 1977 as the Suns’ all-time leading scorer.
Survived by his twin brother, Tom Van Arsdale, who was also a three-time All-Star, Dick’s legacy continued through their shared time playing together in Phoenix during the 1976-77 season.
Following his playing career, Dick Van Arsdale contributed to the Suns in various roles, including as a broadcaster and front-office executive.
