On Tuesday, the Dallas Stars made public their signing of Emil Hemming, their first-round pick in 2024, to a three-year, entry-level contract.

The 29th overall selection in this year’s draft recorded seven goals and four assists, totaling 11 points, during his inaugural season with TPS in the Finnish men’s league. Standing at 6-foot-1 and weighing 205 pounds, Hemming may not be known for his physicality, but his dependable defensive skills made him an appealing choice in this year’s draft.
According to the final NHL Draft Rankings by Daily Faceoff prospect analyst Steven Ellis, Hemming is seen as a potential bottom-six forward who excels in outmuscling opponents while maintaining discipline and enduring the challenges throughout the game. While he has the capacity to exhibit offensive creativity, a key area for improvement is his skating, which could ultimately lead to a more significant role in the NHL. Nevertheless, Hemming’s strong work ethic should secure him a place within the team, even if it’s in a supporting capacity.
The Stars will closely monitor Hemming’s progress throughout the 2024-25 season to assess any developments in his offensive performance. Previously a part of Finland’s fourth line in the World Junior Championship, it’s expected that his role will expand as he is likely to represent the team again in 2025.
In the 2023-24 season, the Stars achieved a remarkable 52-21-9 record and amassed 113 points, securing the top positions in both the Central Division and Western Conference. Despite reaching the Western Conference Final, the team faced defeat at the hands of the Edmonton Oilers in a six-game series.
During this season, forward Jason Robertson led the team in scoring with 80 points (29 goals and 51 assists), with Joe Pavelski following closely with 67 points (27 goals and 40 assists).
