As part of his buyout agreement with the Jazz, veteran guard Russell Westbrook opted to forfeit $ 1.7 million, as reported by Keith Smith of Spotrac. Utah waived Westbrook on Saturday.
This buyout lowers Westbrookβs cap hit for the Jazz from 4,027,525π‘π 2,327,525, providing the team with greater salary cap flexibility. Currently, no team has more cap space than the Jazz, who still have around $ 33 million available.

The Clippers could have pursued a similar buyout with Westbrook, but trading him to Utah allowed them to offer Kris Dunn a more lucrative contract than they otherwise could have. By using Westbrookβs outgoing salary for matching purposes, L.A. was able to acquire Dunn via sign-and-trade, giving him a starting salary of $ 5,168,000 on his new three-year deal.
Westbrook is expected to serve as Jamal Murray’s main backup and play a significant role for Denver this season, with Nikola Jokic reportedly supporting the addition of the former MVP.
