Just In: “Mixed Feelings” As Charlotte Adds Two FCS Opponents To Future Football Schedules

The Charlotte 49ers have scheduled games with two Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) teams for future seasons, according to FBSchedules.com.

Contracts for games against Elon University and Charleston Southern University were obtained through a state public records request from the University of North Carolina Charlotte.

On Saturday, Sept. 11, 2027, Charlotte will host the Elon Phoenix of the Coastal Athletic Association at Jerry Richardson Stadium in Charlotte, N.C. The 49ers will pay Elon a $315,000 guarantee for this game.

Charlotte and Elon first faced off in 2014 and played again in 2016. Elon won the first meeting in 2014 in Elon, N.C., while Charlotte triumphed in 2016 in Charlotte, 47-14.

With Elon added, Charlotte’s non-conference schedule for 2027 now includes three opponents. The 49ers will start the season on the road against Ole Miss on Sept. 4 and, after hosting Elon, will play Appalachian State at home on Sept. 18.

In 2028, the Charleston Southern Buccaneers of the Big South-OVC Association will visit Charlotte on Saturday, Sept. 2, also at Jerry Richardson Stadium. Charleston Southern will receive a $315,000 guarantee for this game, with the contract noting the possibility of rescheduling to Thursday, Aug. 31, or Friday, Sept. 1.

Charlotte has lost both previous encounters with Charleston Southern, falling 36-14 in Charleston, S.C., in 2013, and 47-41 in overtime in Charlotte in 2014.

For 2028, Charlotte’s only other scheduled non-conference game is a road matchup against Appalachian State.
