Blockbuster Trade Alert: Eagles Set to Swap Former Pro Bowl Star for Panthers Veteran in Bold Move

The Philadelphia Eagles undertook significant changes to their defense during the offseason, yet former Pro Bowl defensive end Josh Sweat remains part of the team despite persistent trade speculation. According to a trade proposal from Bleacher Report’s Alex Ballentine, the Eagles could potentially move Sweat to the Carolina Panthers in exchange for a future draft pick and another defensive player.

The proposed trade would see the Eagles receive a second-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft and pass rusher K’Lavon Chaisson from the Panthers. This suggestion comes as the Panthers look to bolster their pass rush following the departure of star defender Brian Burns, who was traded to the New York Giants earlier this offseason.

Ballentine’s proposal, detailed in a July 26, 2024 article titled “1 Trade Each NFL Team Should Consider Before the 2024 Season Starts,” notes that the Eagles recently restructured Sweat’s contract to include more guaranteed money for the current season. However, his contract does not extend beyond this year, which makes him a potential trade candidate.

The report also highlights that both Sweat and fellow pass rusher Haason Reddick were reportedly on the trading block earlier in the offseason. The Eagles have since traded Reddick to the Jets and signed Bryce Huff to strengthen their defensive line. With expectations for Nolan Smith to significantly improve in his second year, the Eagles appear to be setting up their pass-rushing lineup for the future.

Ballentine suggests that trading Sweat could provide the Eagles with a valuable second-round pick, potentially better than what they might receive through the compensatory draft pick system, as well as another pass-rusher to bolster their rotation. This trade could align with the Eagles’ broader strategy of optimizing their roster and balancing short-term performance with long-term planning.
