Just In: Rockies Secures Top-Elite with Huge Resume To a “Trivial” Contract

The Rockies have brought Chasen Shreve on board with a minor league contract, according to his MLB.com profile. Shreve was recently released from his previous minor league deal with the Yankees, and he has quickly joined his ninth big league organization in his 15-year professional career.

Shreve has played for seven of these teams in the Majors, with 174 2/3 of his 356 career big league innings coming from two prior stints with the Yankees. Despite minor league deals with the Rangers and Yankees in 2024, Shreve did not make it back to the Majors. At 34 years old, he’s aiming to secure a spot on the Rockies’ roster and extend his MLB career to an 11th season.

Throughout his journeyman career, Shreve boasts a respectable 3.97 ERA, a 25.3% strikeout rate, and a 10.8% walk rate. However, his recent seasons have been inconsistent, with a 6.49 ERA in 26 1/3 innings with the Mets in 2022 and a 4.63 ERA in 44 2/3 innings with the Tigers and Reds last year. A combined 3.64 SIERA over the 2022-23 seasons suggests a more favorable view of Shreve’s performance, as his numbers were affected by an unusually high homer rate in 2022.

This year, Shreve has excelled in Triple-A, recording a 1.89 ERA in 33 1/3 innings with the Rangers’ and Yankees’ top affiliates. His strong performance in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League with Triple-A Sugar Land offers optimism that he can maintain this form in another such environment in Albuquerque. With the Rockies’ struggling bullpen and a lack of left-handed options, Shreve could soon be back in the Majors.
