Reports: Bison defensive line comes into 2024 with high expectations

NDSU’s defensive line return three starters from last season.

In two weeks, Bison Football will head to Colorado for the season opener, where they’ll face off against Heisman Trophy hopeful Shedeur Sanders.

As they enter the 2024 season, the Bison boast a wealth of talent on their defensive line.

“We aim to be the top defense in the FCS. That’s our goal, and we plan to demonstrate our capabilities, particularly in the first game in Colorado,” said sophomore defensive tackle Logan Larson.

The Bison defensive line returns ten players from last season, including three starters, with all-conference pick Dylan Hendricks among them.

“We plan to rotate a lot of players. We have a lot of talent. Toby (Anene) is a big, powerful, and fast player, while Kelton (McCaslin) is long, athletic, and quick,” Hendricks said. “We’ve got a lot of talented guys, and we’re excited to use everyone in their own unique ways.”

The defensive line will be guided by a new leader, returning Bison legend Carlton Littlejohn. The immediate challenge is to pressure Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders.

“I’m relying on the Mostaert brothers and Coach Goeser to handle their roles, and I’m stepping back to let the talented team shine,” said Co-Defensive Coordinator Grant Olson. “One of the key things I’ve done is trust them, and they’ve done an excellent job taking it forward.”

Senior defensive tackle Eli Mostaert expressed his eagerness: “I always enjoy sacking quarterbacks. I didn’t get to do it as much last year, so it would be great to sack a QB in that atmosphere with so many people watching. I’m really looking forward to it.”

Head Coach Tim Polasek noted that promising sophomore defensive end Kelton McCaslin, who has been sidelined with a leg injury, will see a specialist soon to assess his future.
