Summer is all about fun, and that fun begins with the young talent. As Dallas Stars fans, we focus on the kids in the team’s development system. Who’s set to move up to the big league? Who’s still developing?

Derek Neumeier, assistant director of scouting at McKeen’s Hockey and a long-time friend of DBD, is back with Wes and Mark. With the 2024 NHL Draft behind us and training camp approaching, they dedicated an entire episode to Nothing But Prospects. Here’s what you can expect to learn: which Stars prospects are the most exciting to watch, where Mavrik Bourque and Logan Stankoven will kick off their seasons, and much more!

Thanks for the discussion; it was really interesting!

Here are a few friendly thoughts:

  • It was intriguing to hear Derek’s take on Bourque. I sensed a difference of opinion compared to David Castillo. It seems Derek isn’t as high on Mavrik as David and many of us are. Regardless, I wouldn’t want to be the one telling this young man he has to return to the AHL. He was the league MVP last year and has nothing left to prove there. It’s up to PDB and the team to help him thrive with the right players around him.
  • I would have liked to hear more about other prospects further down the list. For instance, Antonio Stranges didn’t get much spotlight.
  • I’m extremely excited about Bichsel! He has the potential to be a Chara-type defenseman.

I have more confidence in Derek’s opinion than David’s since Derek is a professional scout. Among the big three prospects (Wyatt, Logan, and Mavrik), I’ve always felt that Bourque is clearly in third place, and it looks like the organization shares that view.
