East Carolina College Football Preview: Top Transfers, Season Prediction, Win Total 2024 And More

East Carolina Pirates Preview 2024

Alright, East Carolina, time to bounce back! After a rough patch, it’s time to get back to winning. From 2004 to 2014, ECU was strong, but six consecutive losing seasons hurt. Coach Mike Houston had a successful turnaround with 15 wins over two seasons, but things slipped again with a 2-10 record in 2023. Offensively, it was a struggle, but five of those losses could have been very different.

This year, the transfer portal should help address offensive issues, and the defense looks promising. Plus, the American Athletic Conference isn’t particularly strong. Other teams may feel optimistic too, but ECU won’t face Memphis, Tulane, or South Florida this season.

Offense

The Pirates’ offense hit a low in 2023, scoring fewer points than they had since 1986. The lack of a downfield passing game was a significant issue, but with two experienced transfer quarterbacks, the offense should improve quickly.

The receiving corps has potential, featuring Chase Sowell, who had a solid freshman year, and some promising new talent from the transfer portal. The running game will also look to improve with returning starters and backs who need increased touches.

Defense

The defense showed improvement last year, allowing only 341 yards and 22.4 points per game, largely by limiting first downs. While more sacks would help, featuring players like Chad Stephens and Ryheem Craig, the defense should remain strong.

The secondary, led by standout Shavon Revel, was effective at bending without breaking, and former Maryland player Gavin Gibson is set to be a top contributor.

Key to the Season

Revitalizing the passing game is crucial. The effective 2022 passing attack needs to return, with quarterbacks and receivers ready to step up, starting with standout sophomore Chase Sowell.

Top Transfers

In: QBs Katin Houser and Jake Garcia, both ready to compete for the starting role.
Out: S Teagan Wilk, who transferred to Houston after injuries.

Key Game

UTSA, Sept. 28 – This matchup will determine if the Pirates can be competitive in the conference.

2024 Prediction

Last year’s rough schedule was tough, but this year’s lineup looks more manageable. ECU should capitalize on having no top teams from last year’s slate and could see several wins. Expect a total win projection of 6.5.
