Reports: Massive News As Southern University Gets $1.1M For Project

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Southern University has received a $ 1,172,990 grant from the National Science Foundation for a project focused on advancing 3D printing and fostering inclusivity in STEM fields, as announced by Congressman Troy A. Carter.

“This Major Research Instrumentation (MRI) grant will support cutting-edge research aimed at enhancing additive manufacturing, thus contributing to scientific advancement and strengthening the national manufacturing workforce,” noted the NSF.

The grant will enable Southern University to purchase a multi-material laser powder bed fusion (MM L-PBF) machine, which will enhance engineering research and education in multi-material manufacturing.

“The MM L-PBF system will facilitate groundbreaking research into the interactions and bonding of different materials, leading to components with varied composition, microstructures, and properties,” the NSF stated.

The project’s goal is to boost STEM education and workforce development in underserved communities. Additionally, it aims to deepen understanding of multi-material additive manufacturing and advance areas such as aerospace, biomedical engineering, and electronics.
