Bill Self didn’t hold back after the Kansas Jayhawks suffered a crushing 34-point loss to BYU on Tuesday night. The 91-57 defeat in Provo matched the largest margin of defeat during Self’s highly successful tenure at Kansas, and it’s expected to drop the Jayhawks out of the AP Top 25 for the first time since 2009.
After the game, Self was brutally honest about his team’s performance.
“It was awful,” he said. “We’re obviously embarrassed we didn’t show up, but credit to BYU—they could have beaten anyone tonight. They were excellent, but we didn’t put up any fight. We’re not that bad a team, but tonight, we were.”
While no fan wants to hear such a blunt assessment, it’s hard to find positives in a 34-point loss. Despite the setback, Kansas remains 17-8, with several solid wins under their belt, and is still likely to make the NCAA Tournament, barring a major collapse. However, their chances of securing a top-four seed in the tournament—something they’ve done every year since 2000—appear slim.
