Knicks May Sign Former Top Draft Pick

The New York Knicks could use some additional depth at the center position.

It’s clear that the Knicks are in need of a center, but they might also benefit from having some backup options.

Ahead of the trade deadline, the Knicks were linked to a few big men, but ultimately chose to stick with their current center group, except for trading Jericho Sims.

The decision to trade Sims was due to the anticipated return of Mitchell Robinson in the next few weeks, with reports suggesting March 1 as a potential target for his return.

However, Robinson’s recovery timeline has been uncertain, as he was originally expected back in December.

Given these uncertainties, the Knicks are still in need of another center and had explored trade options. While they hope Robinson can fill the role they need, they might also consider signing free agent center Mo Bamba as a backup plan.

Bamba, 26, became a free agent after being traded by the Los Angeles Clippers to the Utah Jazz, who waived him. A New York native and the No. 6 overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft, Bamba still has potential.

Although he hasn’t fully lived up to the pre-draft hype, Bamba could still provide value in a limited role for the Knicks.

The Knicks wouldn’t require Bamba to play significant minutes—he would simply offer size and provide some relief minutes when Karl-Anthony Towns needs a break.

While the Knicks likely won’t sign Bamba due to the need to make a roster move to accommodate him, it could be worth considering if Robinson’s injury situation worsens.
