Hurricanes Make Star Forward Huge Contract Offer
The Carolina Hurricanes have made a bold move with their latest star forward, offering him a substantial contract despite his early struggles. Mikko Rantanen, who has only recorded one goal and two assists in his first seven games with the Hurricanes, was previously the top goal scorer for the Colorado Avalanche. His recent performance has sparked trade rumors, but the Hurricanes appear focused on the long-term future with Rantanen.
Elliotte Friedman shared on Sportsnet’s Saturday Headlines that the Hurricanes extended a major contract offer to Rantanen’s camp during the 4 Nations Face-Off. Friedman suggested that the offer could be worth more than $100 million.
“The Hurricanes met with his representatives face-to-face,” Friedman reported. “They made an offer, and I believe it’s a nine-figure offer. It’s a very big offer.”
While Rantanen and his camp have not yet accepted or declined the offer, Friedman noted that Rantanen needs time to evaluate the situation. “Rantanen has not said yes or no yet,” Friedman added. “He’s just taking time to process everything that’s happened.”
It’s understandable that Rantanen would need time to adjust, especially given that the trade from the Avalanche was unexpected, and he hasn’t found his form since the move.
A key reason the Avalanche may have moved on from Rantanen was his reported asking price for a new contract. Rantanen is reportedly seeking a deal similar to Leon Draisaitl’s, which is valued at $14 million per year over eight years. Although it’s unlikely Rantanen will reach such a figure, with the potential nine-digit offer from the Hurricanes, he could soon become one of the highest-paid players in the NHL.
