Former South Alabama Quarterback Sensation Hired In Off-Field Position

Former South Alabama quarterback Desmond Trotter has been appointed to an off-field role at his alma mater, as confirmed by head coach Major Applewhite on Tuesday.

Trotter, who played for the Jaguars from 2018 to 2023, will take on a player development position. His responsibilities will include community outreach, helping build Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) connections between players and potential donors, as well as assisting in recruiting efforts.

“I can’t think of anyone who embodies the spirit of being a Jaguar better than Dez,” Applewhite stated. “He earned his degree, has a stellar reputation, carries himself with class and integrity, and consistently delivers when called upon. He’s an excellent addition to our organization.”

Desmond Trotter, who is the grandson of Alabama and NFL icon Ozzie Newsome, was the primary starting quarterback for most of the 2019 and 2020 seasons. Though he served as a backup to Jake Bentley and Carter Bradley during the last three years of his college career, Trotter ranks fourth in South Alabama history for all-time passing yards (3,828) and second in touchdown passes (29).

After considering a transfer following the 2022 season, Trotter opted to return for his final year of eligibility. He showcased his skills late in the season when Bradley was injured, throwing a career-high four touchdown passes in a game against Texas State and contributing both rushing and passing touchdowns in a 59-10 victory over Eastern Michigan in the 68 Ventures Bowl.

“I’m proud of him,” said Applewhite, who previously served as the Jaguars’ quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator before becoming head coach this season. “Having coached him for the past three years gave me the chance to know him deeply and learn about his family. If anyone wants to see a ‘model Jaguar’ close to graduation, it’s Desmond Trotter.”
