Washington Nationals Sign Key Free Agent, Reunite With All-Star Closer
The Washington Nationals have made significant strides in strengthening their bullpen during the offseason, including bringing back one of their key relievers, All-Star closer Kyle Finnegan. This move was confirmed by Robert Murray of FanSided.
According to Jesse Rogers of ESPN, the deal is a one-year, $6 million contract for the veteran reliever.
Finnegan, who was surprisingly non-tendered earlier in the offseason, has been with the Nationals since 2020, following a stint in the minor leagues with the Oakland Athletics from 2013 to 2019. He made his MLB debut with Washington, initially appearing in 25 games during his first season, posting a 2.92 ERA with 27 strikeouts in 24.2 innings.
Over the next few seasons, Finnegan worked mostly in the closer role, with 2023 and 2024 being his primary closing years. In 2023, he recorded 38 saves in 65 appearances, striking out 60 batters while walking 24, posting a 1.335 WHIP, and allowing only nine home runs. His standout performance earned him his first All-Star appearance.
With Finnegan returning, he will be part of a revamped bullpen, which now includes new additions like Jorge López, Lucas Sims, Colin Poche, Evan Reifert, and potentially Shinnosuke Ogasawara, depending on his role.
This mix of veteran arms should give Washington a solid bullpen and help secure games as they work to close out contests beyond their starting rotation. Finnegan’s return ensures stability in the closer role, addressing the Nationals’ main question mark in the bullpen.
