SAN MARCOS, Texas — The UTSA Roadrunners suffered a 49-10 defeat against Texas State in the I-35 Showdown on Saturday at UFCU Stadium.
With this loss, UTSA’s record falls to 1-1 for the season, marking their first setback in the six-game series against the Bobcats, who improved to 2-0.
UTSA utilized two quarterbacks who combined for 252 passing yards. Owen McCown completed 10 passes for 105 yards in the first half, while Eddie Lee Marburger amassed 147 yards and a touchdown on 14 completions after halftime. Marburger also notched a career-best 23 rushing yards on five carries.
In the third quarter, Marburger threw a 2-yard touchdown pass to Willie McCoy, who also recorded a 40-yard reception in the fourth, amassing a team-leading 59 receiving yards on three catches.
Devin McCuin led the Roadrunners in receptions with six for 29 yards, while Patrick Overmyer caught three passes for 31 yards, and Chris Carpenter gathered two catches for 43 yards.
Defensively, Ken Robinson led UTSA with seven tackles, including one for a loss. Martavius French and Jimmori Robinson each added five tackles, with one tackle for loss apiece. Jermarius Lewis, Owen Pewee, and Brevin Randle also contributed with five tackles each.
Texas State showcased a well-rounded offense, racking up 504 total yards—309 through the air and 195 on the ground. Quarterback Jordan McCloud completed 18 of 27 passes for 309 yards and two touchdowns, while Chris Dawn Jr. accumulated 150 yards and both touchdowns on just five receptions. Lincoln Pare led the rushing attack with 109 yards and two touchdowns.
The game kicked off with a big play from UTSA as cornerback Zach Morris intercepted a pass at Texas State’s 33-yard line on the opening drive. Unfortunately, UTSA could not take advantage, turning the ball over on downs.
Texas State struck first when McCloud scrambled for a 17-yard touchdown run with 6:19 left in the first quarter.
UTSA answered back with a 13-play, 66-yard drive, featuring a 44-yard reception by Houston Thomas, and capped with a 26-yard field goal from Chase Allen.
The Bobcats then rattled off 28 consecutive points in the first half, taking a 35-3 lead into halftime. McCloud scored on a 2-yard keeper late in the first quarter, followed by a 46-yard touchdown pass to Dawn early in the second. Deion Hankins added a 2-yard touchdown run, and Pare capped off the half with a 45-yard touchdown dash after a fourth-down conversion.
Texas State extended its lead with a 21-yard touchdown catch by Dawn midway through the third quarter.
UTSA converted a fourth-and-goal late in the third, with Marburger connecting with McCoy for a 2-yard touchdown.
Pare rounded out the scoring with a 33-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.
The Roadrunners will head to Austin next Saturday, September 14, to face No. 3 Texas (2-0), with kickoff scheduled for 6 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN.
