Are the San Antonio Spurs a good landing spot if the New Orleans Pelicans decide to trade Brandon Ingram?
As the New Orleans Pelicans gear up for the upcoming season, speculation about Brandon Ingram’s future continues to swirl. This offseason, Ingram has been a hot topic in trade discussions, especially since he’s approaching free agency and the Pelicans haven’t shown much eagerness to sign him to a lucrative contract.
Despite the belief that Ingram might be traded, the Pelicans have been proactive in the trade market, acquiring Dejounte Murray from the Atlanta Hawks. The potential trio of Ingram, Murray, and Zion Williamson is intriguing, given their individual talents. Yet, their offensive chemistry has been lacking thus far.
If the trio struggles to find synergy, New Orleans might consider moving on from Ingram. Recently, Andy Bailey of Bleacher Report mentioned the San Antonio Spurs as a viable trade partner for Ingram.
With Victor Wembanyama on a rookie deal and Devin Vassell signed for less than a max contract, San Antonio could justify a small overpay for Ingram in the coming years, even if committing to a max contract is challenging.
Bailey pointed out that if any organization could maximize Ingram’s defensive capabilities, it would be San Antonio’s coaching staff.
The Spurs could make an intriguing destination for Ingram, as they look to pair a star with Wembanyama, who showed immense potential in his rookie season. The combination of Ingram and Wembanyama would bring significant height to the court, with Wembanyama being one of the league’s premier shot-blockers and Ingram providing solid wing defense.
However, similar to the situation in New Orleans, offensive fit could be problematic. Ingram tends to thrive with the ball in his hands, which may limit his compatibility with other players.
Still, he’d be a powerful addition to the Spurs, capable of averaging over 20 points per game. If the Pelicans struggle at the season’s start, the Spurs have the assets to pursue a trade if it aligns with their plans.
