Seahawks Strengthen Defensive Line with Veteran Re-Signing
The Seattle Seahawks’ defensive front will see a familiar face in 2025 as one of the team’s key veteran interior defensive linemen re-signs. Ahead of the free agency period beginning on March 10, defensive tackle Jarran Reed has agreed to a new three-year, $25 million contract with Seattle, as reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter. This deal is worth more than the one he signed last year to return to the Seahawks for the 2023 season.
At 32 years old, Reed is entering his 10th NFL season. He originally spent five seasons with Seattle after being drafted by the team in the second round of the 2016 draft. Following two seasons in Green Bay and Kansas City, he returned to the Seahawks on a two-year, $9 million deal that expired after the 2024 season. As an unrestricted free agent, Reed has now rejoined the team for the foreseeable future.
Reed will continue to contribute to Mike Macdonald’s defense, possibly with the goal of retiring with the Seahawks. Last season, he played all 17 regular-season games, recording 45 tackles, 5 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, and 15 quarterback hits. Standing at 6-3 and weighing 306 pounds, Reed has become a key leader on the team since his return two seasons ago. He ranks 43rd in Seahawks history with 105 career games played, becoming one of just 52 players to reach the 100-game milestone.
Though Reed may not post eye-popping statistics like top-tier interior linemen, his leadership and mentorship have been crucial, especially for rookie Byron Murphy II, who will have the chance to build on his relationship with Reed in his second season.
With Reed back in the fold, Seattle’s defensive line is set to retain most of its key contributors from last season. Along with Reed and Murphy, Pro Bowler Leonard Williams leads the group, and veteran Johnathan Hankins could also be brought back for 2025.
The Seahawks made some moves recently, releasing Roy Robertson-Harris and cutting Dre’Mont Jones, who switched to outside linebacker last season. With free agency approaching, Macdonald and general manager John Schneider may look to add more talent to the defensive line.
