Suns, Rockets in Major Discussions Over Potential Kevin Durant Trade
As the NBA regular season nears its end, speculation about the offseason is intensifying, particularly concerning Phoenix Suns forward Kevin Durant. After nearly being traded at the February deadline, Durant and the Suns are expected to part ways this summer. One team to keep an eye on in this scenario is the Houston Rockets.
The Rockets, after years of rebuilding, could target Durant as their “win-now” piece to help them compete for a championship. Houston has focused heavily on developing its young core since parting ways with James Harden, and adding the 6-foot-10 forward could elevate them into serious title contention. The key question is how much Phoenix will demand in return.
Duane Rankin of The Arizona Republic reports that the Suns are likely to ask for three first-round picks and a young player in a trade for the future Hall of Famer. While several teams could meet those demands, the Rockets stand out due to their developing talent and current position in the Western Conference. Houston is 40-25 and firmly in the playoff picture, whereas Phoenix is outside the Play-In Tournament and struggling significantly.
While the Rockets have the assets to pursue Durant, a major concern is what they’d have to give up for a 36-year-old player. Despite still being one of the league’s best, averaging nearly 27 points per game, Durant is nearing the end of his career, making him a short-term investment. This would shift Houston’s long-term focus, something they’ve emphasized in recent years.
However, the trade could be too tempting to pass up. If the Rockets agree to Phoenix’s demands, they would likely only lose one player from their young core. The draft picks could be a concern, but Houston is projected to receive Phoenix’s potential lottery pick this year, along with a first-round pick in 2027, providing the Rockets with some leverage in negotiations. This makes the deal even more appealing.
