CHICAGO (AP) — Rookie Brady Basso showcased his talent by allowing just five hits through the sixth inning, securing his first major league win as the Oakland Athletics defeated the Chicago White Sox 2-0 on Friday night. This loss extended the White Sox’s streak to 16 consecutive home defeats.
Chicago was shut out for the 18th time this season, managing only six hits. With a record of 33-115, they are steadily approaching the dubious post-1900 record of 120 losses set by the 1962 New York Mets in their first season.
In his second major league start and fifth appearance overall, Basso (1-0) struck out two batters and walked one over 5 1/3 innings. In his previous outing, he pitched six scoreless innings against Detroit, ending in a no-decision.
The 26-year-old left-hander, recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas on September 5 for his fourth stint with the A’s, expressed his excitement: “It’s just been a blast, a dream come true. I was just commanding the baseball and letting my teammates make plays. I’ve improved my pitch placement, especially keeping it off the plate.”
A’s manager Mark Kotsay praised Basso’s development, noting, “He keeps hitters off balance with varied speeds. He’s had a solid season in the minors and now has the chance to showcase his skills heading into next season.”
Zack Gelof and Brent Rooker each contributed to the score with an RBI double and single, respectively, helping the A’s win for the third time in four games.
After Basso walked Bryan Ramos to start the sixth and Andrew Benintendi singled, Michel Otañez took over on the mound. Tyler Ferguson handled a flawless eighth inning, while Mason Miller recorded his 25th save despite allowing a single in the ninth.
For Chicago, Zack Gelof’s double pushed Daz Cameron home, and Rooker’s bloop single in the fifth lifted the score to 2-0. Garrett Crochet (6-12) pitched four innings, allowing just one run while the team continued to carefully manage his workload. Despite a strong start, Crochet’s record has now slipped to 0-7 in his last 16 starts.
In injury updates, A’s first baseman Tyler Soderstrom, out since July 9 with a left wrist injury, has joined the team in Chicago with a possibility of reactivation this weekend. Meanwhile, the White Sox placed right-handed pitcher Matt Foster on the 15-day injured list due to a lumbar spine disc herniation, calling up left-hander Jake Eder from Triple-A Charlotte.
Looking ahead, Oakland’s J.T. Ginn (0-1, 4.58 ERA) is set to face Chicago’s Chris Flexen (2-14, 5.26 ERA) on Saturday night. Flexen is on a winless streak of 22 starts, marking a new record for the franchise.
