Inside The Late Drama As Lamar stuns No. 20 Weber State for upset win

In a nail-biting finish, the Lamar University football team pulled off an upset against a nationally-ranked opponent on Saturday. No. 20 Weber State lined up for a field goal in the final seconds, but the attempt drifted wide left, securing a 17-16 victory for Lamar at Provost Umphrey Stadium in Beaumont. The missed kick sent Lamar’s players into a frenzy as they rushed the field to celebrate a win that could change the trajectory of the program.

“It’s hard to describe,” head coach Pete Rossomando said in his post-game interview. “We’ve achieved something that no one believed we could, and that makes it even more exciting.”

Holding onto a one-point lead in the closing moments, Lamar’s defense had to make several crucial stops to secure the victory. Just minutes before the missed field goal, Weber State was halted on a 4th-down run at the goal line.

Lamar took possession next but quickly went three-and-out, handing the ball back to Weber State at midfield with just 44 seconds remaining. The Wildcats advanced into field goal range, but the 40-yard attempt was missed as time ran out.

With two consecutive wins, the Cardinals (2-1) are now looking forward to another home game next weekend against Texas Southern.
