The Texas Longhorns are among several programs that have decided to forgo a traditional spring game in favor of an NFL-style offseason approach. Head coach Steve Sarkisian explained that with nearly 30 new players on the roster, the primary focus is on getting them acclimated rather than holding a public scrimmage.
Looking ahead to 2025, Texas will have significant changes across the roster, including four new starters on the offensive line, the loss of four of its top pass catchers, a restructured secondary, and a new starting quarterback in Arch Manning. While Manning appears poised to take over for Quinn Ewers, he will be working with an inexperienced group of receivers.
As confirmed earlier this week by On Texas Football’s CJ Vogel, the most experienced returning receiver, DeAndre Moore, will be sidelined this spring. “With WR DeAndre Moore sidelined this spring, Ryan Wingo (29) will be the only WR or TE on the roster this spring who has recorded a reception in their college career,” Vogel noted. Wingo, a former five-star recruit, recently underwent LASIK surgery after coaches noticed he was struggling with his vision, which could lead to a resurgence in his play.
Manning won’t be lacking in raw talent around him, as Texas has brought in several high-profile recruits. The team added five-star wide receiver Kaliq Lockett, highly regarded four-star Jaime French—who was once ranked as the No. 1 athlete in the country—and dynamic playmaker Michael Terry III. Additionally, blue-chip receivers from the 2024 class, including Aaron Butler and Parker Livingstone, could step into larger roles this season. If necessary, the Longhorns may also explore options in the NCAA transfer portal.
Last season, Moore led the team with 39 receptions for 456 yards and seven touchdowns. His absence this spring further emphasizes the need for Texas’ young receiving corps to step up as the team looks to contend for its first national title since the Vince Young era.
