“Liberty Receiver Sensation: Patience in Injury Recovery Leads to Glory!”

LYNCHBURG, Va. (WSET) — The 2023 season was a spectacular one for the Liberty Flames football team.

Wide receiver Reese Smith, however, wasn’t able to join in the excitement.

The West Virginia transfer spent the entire championship season in recovery due to a torn ACL and meniscus that kept him off the field. A subsequent meniscus tear this summer cast uncertainty over his 2024 season and his future in football.

Despite all that, there Smith was late Saturday night and into Sunday morning at Williams Stadium, stepping up when the Flames needed him most against East Carolina.

“Being patient is a core principle for me, and this moment truly defines it,” Smith said after the Flames’ 35-24 victory over East Carolina. “It can be tough not to feel discouraged, especially mentally… I just had to stay positive.”

That patience paid off, as Smith recorded six receptions for 80 yards, including three spectacular touchdown catches that helped secure the win for the Flames. He mentioned he has been feeling more like himself in recent weeks, particularly after the late-night victory against New Mexico State in week 2, which boosted his confidence. “That game made me realize, ‘Your knees are good, it’s time to go.’ It was time to step up and contribute to the team’s success.”

Smith had his family in attendance on Saturday, including his parents and fiancée, which made his standout performance even more special. “Having family in the stands makes a huge difference… you feel like you’re playing for something greater than yourself… it’s a unique experience. It feels great.”
