Graham Potter chose to step out of the spotlight after being dismissed by Chelsea, but 17 months later, feeling refreshed and in great shape, he is ready to make his return. In his first major interview since leaving Chelsea in April of last year, Potter reflected on the need for a reset after what he described as a “perfect storm” during his time at Stamford Bridge. He expressed excitement about returning to football and believes he has grown both professionally and personally during his time away.

Potter has already received offers from clubs in England, Europe, and even national teams overseas. He believes sporting directors and executives will consider how figures like Unai Emery and Eddie Howe bounced back from difficult experiences. “I’ve been ready to return for a while,” said Potter. “It still needs to be the right opportunity, but I’m excited for what lies ahead.”

Potter acknowledged the toll that not just the seven intense months at Chelsea took on him, but also the 13 years of non-stop coaching, which saw him rise from Sweden’s lower leagues to the Champions League quarter-finals. He reflected on Chelsea’s record £21.5m investment to bring him and his staff from Brighton, but there remains a lingering disappointment over not being allowed to oversee the Champions League tie against Real Madrid.

Despite the frustrations, Potter has found peace through time spent with family, travels, and even a Taylor Swift concert. He has focused on self-care, learning Spanish, and getting into good habits, which he credits for maintaining his “glow-up.” Reflecting on his Chelsea tenure, Potter noted the challenges of managing a massive squad after a £323m January transfer spree, compounded by injuries and a congested schedule.

Despite the setbacks, Potter views his Chelsea experience as a valuable lesson. He admits the circumstances were far from ideal, but believes he has grown as a coach. Now based in Brighton, Potter hasn’t ruled out any opportunities—whether in club or international football—and is open to the next chapter in his career. He remains on the Football Association’s radar as a potential England manager and has been linked to clubs like Everton. However, his passion lies in the day-to-day process of club management, where he can actively build and make a difference.
