The University of Hawaiʻi men’s volleyball team has earned a reputation as road warriors, backed by a devoted traveling fan base. Ranked No. 2 nationally, the Rainbow Warriors (23-3) head back on the road this week after a dominant weekend sweep at UC Irvine, extending their winning streak to seven matches. Hawaiʻi has been exceptionally strong away from home, posting a perfect 9-0 road record this season, including eight wins against ranked opponents, highlighting their ability to excel in challenging environments.
Their success is matched by the presence of passionate fans who often turn opposing arenas into vibrant seas of green and white. Head coach Charlie Wade noted that the growing fan support parallels the program’s sustained excellence. “It’s special,” Wade said. “People have really gotten on board and want to be part of it. It’s amazing to see so many local fans and season ticket holders traveling to road matches. It’s common to see a great crowd every night.”
While fan support doesn’t directly influence on-court performance, Wade emphasized its motivational impact. “They’re not going to help you block a ball or keep a serve in bounds, but it pushes you to keep working hard and striving to be your best,” he said.
The team’s traveling fan base has also impressed commentators. ESPN Honolulu announcer Tiff Wells described moments when the crowd noise almost blurs the line between home and away. “Sometimes you wonder who scored because the cheering comes from the road team. It feels like they’re playing at home,” Wells said. He added that the turnout is consistently remarkable, no matter the location. “It’s not surprising, but it’s always amazing to see the level of support this team gets, match after match on the road,” he said.
