Deion Sanders has completely transformed the Colorado Buffaloes football program in just two seasons since taking the helm. After starting with a struggling 1-11 team, he made progress in his first year, finishing with a 4-8 record, though it was still seen as a disappointment. Now, in his second year, Sanders has led the Buffs to an impressive 8-2 record and is on the verge of reaching the Big 12 Championship Game and securing a spot in the College Football Playoff.
On Monday, ESPN published an article by Clinton Yates that has generated excitement in the college football community. “Someone needs to explain to me who is a better college football coach in the United States than Coach Prime,” Yates stated.
That’s a bold claim, especially considering he hasn’t even completed two full seasons coaching at the FBS level. Fans quickly took to the comments section to voice their opinions. “Let’s see how Coach Prime performs in the SEC or Big Ten…,” one fan remarked. Another added, “Let’s start with Kirby Smart.” A third person said, “I could easily name at least 20 coaches who are better than Deion, and that’s just the minimum.” One commenter questioned, “How many national championships has he won?” while another noted, “Yeah, the argument that Deion Sanders is better than Kirby Smart doesn’t hold much weight….” Another commenter pointed out, “There are literally more than a dozen coaches just in the Power Five who are better.”
While Yates’ statement has certainly received significant backlash, criticism for Sanders and his program persists. Nevertheless, Yates argues that the critics no longer have a legitimate case against him. “After the last six weeks of football, while it might have been tough to be a vocal critic, it’s even more embarrassingly awkward for those who genuinely think their issues with the program are justified.” Yates addressed every criticism fans have directed at Sanders and his team to counter the naysayers.
Some of the claims include that Sanders makes everything about himself instead of focusing on the players, is disrespectful toward his team, comes off as arrogant, neglects the Boulder community, uses his children for personal gain, and puts them ahead of the rest of the team. Regardless of opinions about him, it’s clear that Sanders has significantly improved the program. The Buffs will finish the season with games against Kansas on the road and then at home against Oklahoma State.
