Michigan Football Among Top Choices for Elite 2027 Cornerback
Michigan appears to be in a strong position as it pursues one of the top cornerbacks in the 2027 class. The Wolverines are reportedly well-positioned ahead of the prospect’s upcoming official visit in June.
According to a report from Ethan McDowell of The Wolverine, four-star cornerback Darius Johnson has Michigan firmly in his top three schools.
The California native has several official visits lined up, including trips to University of California on May 28, University of Kansas on June 6, University of Oregon on June 12, and University of Michigan on June 19. Michigan is competing primarily with Oregon and Cal for his commitment.
McDowell noted that Michigan’s blend of strong academics and high-level football has resonated with Johnson and his family. A recent campus visit helped deepen those impressions, while long-standing relationships between the coaching staff and Johnson’s family have also played a key role.
In particular, Johnson has built a close connection with cornerbacks coach Jernaro Gilford, which has strengthened Michigan’s standing in his recruitment.
Outlook for Michigan
Historically, landing West Coast prospects hasn’t always been easy for Michigan, despite its national recruiting reach. However, the current staff—featuring strong ties to the West Coast, including head coach Kyle Whittingham—has improved the program’s ability to compete for talent from that region.
With those relationships in place, along with Michigan’s resources and overall appeal, the Wolverines are in a better position than ever to secure top talent from across the country.
According to recruiting projections, Michigan is currently viewed as the favorite to land Johnson, the 6-foot-1, 155-pound defensive back.
