The Iowa Hawkeyes are making a strong push for an intriguing defensive prospect.
The Iowa Hawkeyes have taken pride in their strong defense for most of the Kirk Ferentz era, but they’ve lost a significant number of key players on that side of the ball this offseason.
Most notably, Iowa is missing all three of its starting linebackers from 2024, including Butkus-Fitzgerald Award winner Jay Higgins.
While Iowa has successfully rebuilt in the past after losing top talent, it may be more challenging for Ferentz and his staff to make impactful changes in the current NIL landscape.
However, it seems Iowa has found a linebacker they are keen to add to their roster: three-star prospect Billy Weivoda from Georgia.
The Hawkeyes have extended an offer to Weivoda, who is scheduled to visit Iowa City for three days from June 13 to 15.

Weivoda is a recruit from the class of 2026, meaning he won’t be able to play for Iowa for a couple of years. However, the Hawkeyes are proactively working to secure their linebacking corps for the future.
The native of Alpharetta, Georgia, is currently ranked as the 56th linebacker in the nation, according to 247 Sports’ composite rankings, and he is the 78th-ranked player overall in Georgia.
He also has upcoming meetings with Appalachian State, Jacksonville State, and Virginia Tech, which could give Iowa a competitive edge due to its prestige. Additionally, he visited Georgia Tech back in January.
