Bucks Eye Former NBA Coach to Replace Doc Rivers as Giannis’ Future Looms
After missing the postseason for the first time in a decade, the Milwaukee Bucks are entering a pivotal offseason—and a surprising name has emerged in their head coaching search.
With Doc Rivers stepping down at the end of the regular season, Milwaukee has quickly identified former Memphis Grizzlies head coach Taylor Jenkins as its primary candidate. According to reports, team owners Wes Edens and Jimmy Haslam, along with GM Jon Horst, recently met with Jenkins in Memphis to discuss the organization’s direction.
Jenkins, who was let go late in the 2024–25 season, has ties to Milwaukee from his time as an assistant under Mike Budenholzer during the 2018–19 campaign. That season saw the Bucks win 60 games and secure the top seed in the Eastern Conference.
Coaching Decision Tied to Giannis’ Future
The coaching search comes at a critical moment for franchise star Giannis Antetokounmpo. Following a disappointing season, Giannis posted a reflective message thanking the city of Milwaukee, sparking speculation about his long-term future with the team.
His comments—particularly references to “rising from the ashes”—have led to questions about whether he intends to remain with the Bucks or consider a fresh start elsewhere.
Milwaukee’s interest in Jenkins could be seen as an effort to stabilize the organization and appeal to Giannis, who has consistently pushed for higher standards from teammates and staff. Jenkins’ reputation for player development and accountability aligns with the culture the Bucks had during their 2021 championship run.
Why Jenkins Fits
Despite being only 41, Jenkins compiled a 250–214 record in Memphis, leading the Grizzlies to four playoff appearances. His ability to develop talent and maximize roster potential stands out, especially for a Bucks team at a crossroads.
His prior experience with the organization and familiarity with Giannis could make the transition smoother if he’s ultimately hired.
