Oklahoma’s Offer to Tahj Gray Could Jumpstart 2028 Recruiting Momentum
The Oklahoma Sooners took an early step in shaping their 2028 recruiting class by extending an offer to elite linebacker Tahj Gray on Sunday.
Gray, a 6-foot-3, 225-pound standout from Montvale, New Jersey, is already regarded as one of the top prospects in his class. With the Sooners now in the mix, they join a long list of major programs competing for his commitment.
Although he still has two years of high school football remaining, Gray has attracted offers from powerhouse schools like Alabama, Texas, Texas A&M, Miami, Florida, and Ohio State.
What Makes Gray Stand Out
Despite limited varsity experience, Gray has quickly proven himself as one of the nation’s premier young defenders. Playing for St. Joseph Regional High School, he delivered a dominant sophomore season in 2025, totaling 102 tackles, 10.5 tackles for loss, four sacks, four pass breakups, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery. That followed a promising freshman year in which he posted 27 tackles and contributed across multiple categories.
His breakout performance earned him a spot in the prestigious Under Armour All-America Game, an event reserved for top-tier high school talent.
Early Stage, Big Opportunity
According to 247Sports composite rankings, Gray is the No. 22 overall player and the No. 2 linebacker in the 2028 class.
Oklahoma currently has no commitments for 2028, after previously losing a pledge from running back Micah Rhodes earlier this year. That leaves the door open for prospects like Gray to become foundational pieces of the class.
While Gray hasn’t taken any official visits yet, he’s been active on the recruiting trail. He attended camps and practices at schools like Notre Dame, Miami, Ohio State, and Florida, giving him early exposure to several top programs.
Because he’s based in the Northeast, Gray would likely need to travel far from home to join a major college program—something that gives Oklahoma an opportunity to establish itself as a serious contender.
With plenty of time before signing day, the Sooners can continue building a relationship through visits, junior day events, and game-day experiences. Given his production, physical tools, and upside, Gray has the potential to become a centerpiece recruit for Oklahoma’s future.
