Arizona’s Veterans Prepared to Anchor Defense
Although the Arizona Wildcats saw several experienced players—especially in the secondary—depart for the NFL Draft, the defense is far from entering a rebuilding phase. Under second-year defensive coordinator Danny Gonzales, a strong core of returning players is ready to build on last season’s success.
The 2025–2026 campaign brought major changes, both on the coaching staff and the roster, but the transition proved effective. Joe Salave’a stepped in to lead the defensive line while also serving as associate head coach, Gonzales moved up from linebackers coach to coordinator, and Josh Bringuel joined to guide the linebackers. Together, the revamped staff helped elevate the unit’s performance.
Arizona’s defense thrived statistically, finishing seventh nationally in pass defense, first in pass efficiency defense, and second in interceptions, while also making notable strides against the run. Much of that success stemmed from a veteran-heavy roster and experienced transfers, combined with strong player development from the coaching staff.
Despite losing key contributors—several defensive backs, linebackers, and linemen now pursuing NFL opportunities—the Wildcats still return a number of seasoned players determined to maintain a high level of play. A few standouts could be central to keeping Arizona among the Big 12’s top defenses.
Taye Brown – Linebacker
Brown headlines a deep linebacker group as a senior leader aiming to cap his career on a high note. Known for his relentless motor and tackling ability, he recorded 94 tackles last season, ranking second on the team. Familiarity with Gonzales’ system should only strengthen his impact, as he continues to excel both against the run and in coverage.
Gavin Hunter – Safety
With Treydan Stukes gone, Hunter is expected to step into a larger role in the secondary. After showing flashes in games against Hawaii, Weber State, and SMU, the junior safety brings both experience and playmaking instincts, positioning him for a potential breakout season.
Tre Smith – Defensive End
Smith’s 2025 season was cut short by injury just as he was gaining momentum, but the sixth-year senior is now back and looking to make up for lost time. Under Salave’a’s guidance, he has the potential to elevate his game and become a key force along the defensive front.
With a solid mix of leadership, experience, and continuity in the system, Arizona’s returning veterans are well-positioned to keep the defense performing at a high level.
