NC State Women’s Basketball Adds All-Big 12 Guard Through Transfer Portal
Head coach Wes Moore continues reshaping NC State’s roster after key departures during the 2026 offseason. Following an inconsistent 2025–26 campaign by the program’s usual high standards, Moore is focused on retooling the team’s identity and filling gaps left by players who exited via the transfer portal.
The Wolfpack landed a major addition with former Colorado Buffaloes women’s basketball guard Desiree Wooten, an All-Big 12 Honorable Mention selection, who committed after a recent visit. She is expected to step into a starting role alongside returning standout Zoe Brooks, giving NC State a revamped backcourt with a different look from last season’s younger squad.
What Wooten Brings
At 5-foot-8, Wooten won’t address size concerns in the backcourt, but she fills an important role after the departure of Zamareya Jones. She was an efficient scorer for Colorado, averaging 13.4 points in limited minutes while shooting 38% from the field and over 35% from three-point range.
Her speed and ability to handle the ball suggest a shift in NC State’s playing style. With additional roster changes, including the loss of Tilda Trygger, the Wolfpack are expected to lean into a smaller, faster lineup that emphasizes transition play.
Roster Outlook
Though NC State was initially slow to make moves in the portal, Moore’s methodical approach has resulted in strong additions like Wooten and Khady Leye, a transfer forward from Auburn Tigers women’s basketball. While the roster is nearing completion with 11 players, the team could still look to add frontcourt depth through either recruiting or additional transfers.
With several returning players set to take on larger roles, NC State appears to be building a retooled squad that could take a different—but potentially effective—approach in the upcoming season.
