Broncos Add Veteran QB for Rookie Minicamp Tryout
The Denver Broncos will host two quarterbacks on a tryout basis at their upcoming rookie minicamp. Initially, it was reported that E.J. Warner, son of Hall of Famer Kurt Warner, would attend. Later, 9NEWS’ Mike Klis confirmed that veteran quarterback Nathan Peterman will also participate.
Peterman, who turns 32 this week and spent time with the Saints, Raiders, and Falcons in 2024, will have a chance to compete for a spot on the Broncos’ offseason roster.
The Broncos aren’t searching for a long-term replacement for quarterbacks like Jarrett Stidham or Sam Ehlinger. Instead, they need additional “camp arms” to provide reps for their newly drafted tight ends, running backs, and four college free-agent wide receivers. With Bo Nix expected to miss June’s OTAs and mandatory minicamp, another quarterback is necessary to keep the third-string offense moving during practice.
Other rookie-eligible players from the team, such as tight end Caleb Lohner, may also participate under the NFL’s “first year” rules, ensuring sufficient reps for the offense.
Warner and Peterman could potentially earn a spot on Denver’s 90-man offseason roster if they impress during minicamp. Roster openings may arise naturally as college free agents are cut, giving them a chance to secure a role.
Nathan Peterman’s Background
Peterman, a 32-year-old veteran, has played in the NFL since being drafted by the Buffalo Bills in the fifth round in 2017 out of Pittsburgh. His career began roughly, throwing five first-half interceptions in his first start against the Chargers, but he persevered. He has six career starts with a 1-5 record and has spent time on the rosters of the Bills, Raiders, and Bears, as well as on the Falcons’ practice squad in 2024. He was out of the league last season.
Peterman, 6-foot-2 and 220 pounds, has career stats of 712 passing yards, four touchdowns, 13 interceptions, a 53.1% completion rate, and a 39.4 QB rating. He also has experience in the West Coast Offense, similar to the system Sean Payton runs, which could give him an edge.
It will be interesting to see him compete against the 22-year-old Warner, who went undrafted out of Fresno State last month, for a potential spot on the Broncos’ roster.
