Illinois Football Adds JUCO Tight End Benjamin Thurman: What It Means for the Illini
Illinois football coach Bret Bielema continues to embrace junior college recruits, and the latest addition is tight end Benjamin Thurman from the College of San Mateo in California. Thurman becomes the fifth JUCO signee in Illinois’ 2026 class and the second tight end, further expanding the Illini’s growing junior college pipeline.
This isn’t Bielema’s first high-profile JUCO pickup: among his other four recruits, three are ranked as the top players at their position by 247 Sports—guard Mike Matelau, defensive back Jakwon Morris, and offensive tackle TJ Taylor—while offensive tackle Alfred Washington is ranked fourth. Thurman may not be the last JUCO to join Illinois, as defensive linemen Deon Williams and Joshua Davis are still considering offers.
Who is Benjamin Thurman?
Thurman is a 6-foot-4, 225-pound sophomore-to-be with three years of eligibility remaining. In 11 games last season with the CSM Bulldogs, he recorded 16 receptions for 332 yards and six touchdowns, helping his team to a 12-1 record and the 3C2A state championship. A strong blocker, Thurman excels as a pass catcher and has demonstrated playmaking ability both outside the numbers and in the slot.
What Thurman Means for Illinois
Thurman’s commitment, choosing Illinois over Ole Miss, California, and Kansas State, strengthens the tight end position, which has limited youth. The Illini currently rely on upperclassmen Christian Abney, Davin Stoffel, and Kaden Feagin, with only one incoming freshman, three-star Will Vala, unlikely to make an immediate impact. Thurman offers flexibility: he could contribute right away in certain packages or be developed over time to adjust to Big Ten competition.
How Thurman Fits in the Offense
With Bielema and offensive coordinator Barry Lunney Jr. frequently utilizing multiple tight ends on the field, Thurman could see snaps in passing situations and short-yardage scenarios if he earns a top-three tight end role. His signing adds both immediate depth and future potential to Illinois’ roster.
