Syracuse Lands Commitment from 2027 Defensive Back Matthew Schlenhardt
Syracuse has added another member to its 2027 recruiting class, securing a commitment from defensive back Matthew Schlenhardt, who announced his decision Sunday evening.
The recruiting process unfolded rapidly between Syracuse and the standout athlete from Maine South High School in Park Ridge, Illinois. Schlenhardt attended Syracuse’s Franchise Camp last week, where his strong showing earned him an official visit invitation. Shortly afterward, head coach Fran Brown extended a scholarship offer, and Schlenhardt committed following his trip to campus.
Before choosing Syracuse, Schlenhardt held offers from the University of Indianapolis, Grand Valley State, and Minnesota State. Ultimately, he decided the Orange was the best fit.
Prior to his visit, Schlenhardt spoke highly of Syracuse’s football program.
“I think Syracuse is one of the toughest and most physical programs in the ACC,” he previously told The Juice Online. “You can tell the coaches genuinely care about their players, and I admire how they compete and succeed in such a challenging conference.”
Although Schlenhardt has played multiple positions in high school—including running back, linebacker, and safety—he is expected to join Syracuse as a safety.
His commitment gives Syracuse 18 pledges in its 2027 recruiting class. The Orange also recently received a commitment from Irondequoit (NY) athlete Josh Barr. According to 247Sports, Syracuse’s 2027 class currently ranks No. 43 nationally, though Schlenhardt has not yet received a ranking from any major recruiting service.
Describing his style of play, Schlenhardt emphasized his toughness and competitive nature.
“I’m an athlete with an unbreakable mindset,” he said. “I play to be physical and win. There’s nothing better than delivering a big hit on a running back or receiver.”
