Mock Trade Suggests Rockets Acquire De’Aaron Fox, But Proposal Raises Questions
With the NBA offseason officially underway, teams across the league are preparing for what could be a busy summer filled with trades, contract negotiations, and draft activity.
The Houston Rockets were initially expected to be among the most aggressive teams in the market after a promising season exposed several areas in need of improvement. While speculation linked Houston to marquee names such as Giannis Antetokounmpo and Kyrie Irving, those rumors have cooled in recent weeks.
Houston’s need for backcourt depth remains evident. The team’s struggles without veteran guard Fred VanVleet highlighted a lack of reliable playmaking, forcing players into unfamiliar roles and exposing weaknesses in the rotation.
A recent mock trade proposal from Spurs writer Cal Durrett offered an intriguing—but controversial—solution. The hypothetical deal would send two-time All-Star point guard De’Aaron Fox from the San Antonio Spurs to Houston in exchange for superstar forward Kevin Durant.
Durrett argued that Durant could be an ideal fit alongside Victor Wembanyama in San Antonio, giving the Spurs a proven elite scorer and creating a clearer path for young guards Dylan Harper and Stephon Castle to take on larger roles. Despite nearing the later stages of his career, Durant remains one of the NBA’s most productive offensive players and would immediately elevate the Spurs’ championship aspirations.
Why the Trade Seems Unlikely
While the proposal generates discussion, there are several reasons to doubt its realism.
For starters, Fox’s trade value is unlikely to be high enough to land a player of Durant’s caliber in a straight swap. Durant remains an All-NBA-level talent and one of the league’s premier scorers, making it difficult to envision Houston moving him for a package centered solely around Fox.
Additionally, the Rockets may have little interest in taking on Fox’s contract, particularly when they already possess a healthy collection of future draft assets. Even if San Antonio were willing to include additional picks, Houston may not view that as sufficient compensation.
The concept appears to stem largely from previous reports linking the Spurs to Durant, but circumstances have changed significantly since then. While San Antonio could still have interest in adding a veteran star, acquiring Durant for a package built around Fox seems highly improbable.
As the offseason unfolds, Houston is expected to explore ways to improve its roster, but this particular blockbuster proposal appears far more speculative than realistic.
