Oregon Commit Sam Ngata Officially Ends Recruitment
The Oregon Ducks received encouraging recruiting news this week as linebacker commit Sam Ngata announced that he is officially shutting down his recruitment.
Ngata, a three-star linebacker and legacy prospect in Oregon’s 2027 class, told 247Sports on June 16 that he is no longer considering other programs. His decision signals a strong commitment to the Ducks and gives head coach Dan Lanning added confidence that one of the program’s key defensive pledges will remain in the fold through signing day.
Recruitment Closed Since Commitment
Ngata had hinted at this decision from the moment he committed to Oregon. Shortly after announcing his pledge, he explained that he had little interest in continuing the recruiting process and expected Oregon to be the only school he would visit moving forward.
He indicated that he did not plan to take unofficial visits elsewhere, attend junior-day events at other programs, or schedule official visits outside of Eugene unless circumstances changed significantly. At the time, he described his recruitment as essentially finished.
That stance is particularly welcome news for Oregon after seeing two previous 2027 commits—offensive tackle Drew Fielder and cornerback Ai’King Hall—decommit and choose rival programs.
Following a Family Tradition
Ngata’s commitment carries extra significance because of his family ties to the Ducks. He is the son of former Oregon star defensive lineman Haloti Ngata, one of the most accomplished defensive players in program history.
Haloti Ngata built an outstanding college career in Eugene before becoming a first-round NFL Draft selection and enjoying a long professional career. His achievements at Oregon included multiple individual honors and eventual induction into the College Football Hall of Fame, creating a legacy that his son now hopes to continue.
Building on the Ngata Name
Rather than being intimidated by expectations, Sam Ngata has embraced them. He has spoken openly about the pride he feels in carrying the Ngata name and the opportunity to represent both his family and the Oregon program.
Ngata has expressed a desire not only to honor his father’s accomplishments but also to elevate the family legacy through his own success. While he recognizes the added pressure that comes with being the son of an Oregon legend, he views it as a challenge he is eager to take on.
With his recruitment now officially closed, Oregon can focus on developing one of the cornerstone pieces of its 2027 defensive class while feeling increasingly confident that Ngata’s future remains firmly tied to the Ducks.
