Browns Encouraged to Move $100 Million Cornerback if the Right Offer Emerges
With the Cleveland Browns seemingly committed to a full-scale rebuild following the trade of Myles Garrett and the accumulation of younger talent and draft capital under general manager Andrew Berry, some analysts believe the team should continue reshaping the roster. That could mean parting ways with veteran players who no longer fit the organization’s long-term timeline.
One player frequently mentioned in that conversation is cornerback Denzel Ward. The five-time Pro Bowler, now entering his eighth NFL season, is 29 years old and remains one of the Browns’ most accomplished players. Ward signed a five-year, $100 million extension in 2022 that runs through the 2027 season, but as the cornerback market has expanded, his contract has become more team-friendly.
Analyst Believes Browns Should Consider Trading Ward
Following Garrett’s departure, speculation surfaced about whether Cleveland might also entertain offers for Ward. Although reports indicated the Browns had not actively discussed trading him, The Athletic’s Zac Jackson argued that moving Ward would align with the franchise’s rebuilding strategy.
Jackson wrote that Cleveland should trade Ward if a suitable offer presents itself, reasoning that a team committed to rebuilding should maximize future assets and absorb short-term salary-cap consequences. He noted that dealing Ward would further emphasize the organization’s commitment to building around younger players and establishing a new defensive core.
Ward’s Leadership Remains a Valuable Asset
However, trading Ward would create more than just a talent gap in the secondary. It would also remove one of the team’s most respected veteran leaders.
While young defenders such as Carson Schwesinger, Jared Verse, and Mason Graham are expected to play major roles moving forward, they are still early in their NFL careers. Ward’s experience and leadership have been instrumental in helping younger teammates develop.
Defensive backs coach Brandon Lynch recently praised Ward’s influence, highlighting his attention to fundamentals, technique, and preparation. Lynch also pointed to fellow veteran Tyson Campbell, saying the pair provide an important example for younger players through both professionalism and on-field performance.
No Signs Ward Wants Out
The situation may ultimately depend on Ward himself. If he were to request a trade, the Browns would likely consider accommodating him. However, there has been little indication that he is seeking a move.
Although Ward missed organized team activities, he attended mandatory minicamp, and Andrew Berry stated that communication with the veteran cornerback has remained positive throughout the offseason.
Berry emphasized that Ward continues to be a significant part of the team and remains one of the NFL’s top cornerbacks, adding that the Garrett trade has not changed the organization’s view of Ward’s value.
