Notre Dame Loses Highly Touted Quarterback Commit Days After Pledge
Notre Dame’s offseason took an unexpected turn after the Fighting Irish lost one of their newest quarterback commitments less than a week after he joined the program.
While Notre Dame appears set at quarterback for the near future with C.J. Carr expected to lead the offense—and widely projected as a potential first-round pick in the 2027 NFL Draft if he enters—the program suffered a setback on the recruiting trail.
According to Rivals’ Hayes Fawcett, four-star quarterback Trey Tagliaferri has reopened his recruitment just six days after committing to the Fighting Irish.
The 6-foot-2, 190-pound signal-caller is ranked as the No. 11 quarterback in the 2028 Rivals300 rankings and is considered one of the top quarterback prospects in his class.
Tagliaferri starred as a sophomore at Bergen Catholic in New Jersey, throwing for 2,215 yards, 29 touchdowns, and only three interceptions during the 2025 season.
His recruitment remains one of the most competitive in the country, with scholarship offers from programs including Alabama, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Penn State, and Rutgers. He has also made multiple visits to Penn State, Rutgers, Ole Miss, Alabama, and Notre Dame, while taking additional trips to Pittsburgh, Syracuse, Illinois, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, and Boston College.
Despite losing Tagliaferri’s commitment, Notre Dame still has several young quarterbacks in its pipeline. The Fighting Irish signed Blake Hebert in the 2025 class, Teddy Jarrad and Noah Grubbs in the 2026 class, and Wonderful Monds IV in the 2027 class, giving the program multiple options for the future once Carr’s college career comes to an end.
With Tagliaferri’s departure, Notre Dame’s 2028 recruiting class now includes two known commitments: three-star safety Andre Jones and kicker Owen Davies.
