Jason Robertson’s Contract Situation Reaches a Critical Stage for the Stars
The Dallas Stars’ offseason has been filled with uncertainty, and the latest development involving star forward Jason Robertson has only added to the concerns surrounding the franchise.
The NHL Players’ Association confirmed that Robertson has elected salary arbitration, a move that puts him on track to become an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2027. While questions about his long-term future have lingered for months, this latest step means Dallas could lose one of its cornerstone players for nothing if a long-term agreement isn’t reached or if the team doesn’t move him before then.
Robertson has established himself as one of the NHL’s elite forwards and remains a key piece of the Stars’ pursuit of their first Stanley Cup championship in more than two decades. Although arbitration provides some short-term clarity, it falls well short of the long-term commitment many Dallas fans were hoping to see.
Robertson’s Long-Term Future Remains Uncertain
One encouraging sign is that Robertson reportedly turned down an eight-year contract worth $15 million per season from the Seattle Kraken, suggesting that both he and the Stars remain interested in continuing their partnership. However, the decision could also be part of a broader negotiation strategy.
General manager Jim Nill may choose to revisit extension talks next offseason, but for now, Robertson’s future remains unresolved.
An annual salary in the neighborhood of $12 million appears reasonable based on today’s market. However, after producing 45 goals, 51 assists, and 96 points last season, Robertson may believe he has earned a contract closer to the league’s highest-paid stars. If so, another standout campaign could further strengthen his bargaining position.
Still, many would argue he has already done enough to justify a long-term commitment. Robertson has consistently delivered elite production while maintaining a professional approach on and off the ice, making the lack of certainty surrounding his future increasingly difficult to understand.
The unresolved situation also leaves the door open for Dallas to explore trade options before the 2027 trade deadline if extension talks stall. Given Robertson’s status as one of the league’s premier scorers, he would likely command a significant return, potentially including multiple first-round draft picks and other valuable assets.
With longtime captain Jamie Benn potentially entering his final season in Dallas, the organization could eventually face difficult decisions about the direction of the franchise.
For now, there is still plenty of hockey to be played, but Robertson’s arbitration filing has done little to ease concerns among Stars fans hoping to see him remain in Dallas for years to come.
