Colts’ Young Offensive Lineman Faces Increased Expectations Entering 2026
The Indianapolis Colts closed the 2025 season on a seven-game winning streak, with one of the team’s biggest strengths being its offensive line.
According to Pro Football Focus, Indianapolis finished with the NFL’s second-highest-graded offensive line, trailing only the Denver Broncos. The unit played a major role in protecting quarterback Daniel Jones, who was sacked just 22 times despite battling a fractured leg early in the year before later suffering a torn Achilles.
While the line excelled last season, maintaining that level of play in 2026 could prove more challenging—especially after losing a key veteran starter.
Jalen Travis Enters Season With Added Pressure
Following the departure of longtime right tackle Braden Smith, second-year lineman Jalen Travis is expected to take over the starting role, making him one of the Colts’ most important young players.
Pro Football Focus analyst Bradley Locker identified Travis as one of the NFL players facing increased pressure heading into the upcoming season.
Locker noted that although Travis wasn’t among the most highly touted rookies in the 2025 draft class, he could play a pivotal role for Indianapolis this year.
Selected in the fourth round, Travis appeared in every game as a rookie and logged 316 offensive snaps, primarily at right tackle. He made the most of his opportunities, earning a 72.2 overall PFF grade while allowing just one sack across 165 pass-blocking snaps. He also received a 72.6 run-blocking grade.
With Smith joining the division-rival Houston Texans during the offseason, Travis is now the favorite to claim the starting right tackle job full-time.
Given Indianapolis’ reputation for developing offensive linemen, Locker believes the former Iowa State standout has the potential to make a smooth transition into a larger role.
Opportunity Comes With Expectations
Although Travis played throughout his rookie campaign, most of his starting opportunities came late in the season after Smith was sidelined by injury.
His strong play in limited action earned the coaching staff’s confidence, but the challenge now becomes sustaining that performance over an entire season.
With the Colts consistently developing offensive line talent, Travis will likely have little room for error if he hopes to hold onto the starting job.
Shane Steichen Confident in Young Tackle
Protecting Daniel Jones will be one of Indianapolis’ biggest priorities entering 2026, particularly after the quarterback dealt with multiple serious leg injuries last season.
That places added responsibility on Travis, who enters the year as the least experienced starter along the offensive line.
Despite that, head coach Shane Steichen has expressed confidence in the young tackle’s future.
Steichen praised Travis’ physical tools, describing him as a player with significant upside while also crediting offensive line coach Tony Sparano Jr. for preparing the unit each week.
The Colts coach also highlighted Travis’ intelligence and ability to quickly grasp the offensive system, adding that he’s excited to see how the second-year lineman continues to develop.
If Travis builds on the promising flashes he showed as a rookie, he could become the next successful offensive lineman to emerge from Indianapolis’ long-standing pipeline. However, with elevated expectations and a full-time starting role now within reach, the 2026 season will be his biggest test yet.
