Kevin O’Connell Sends Strong Message Amid Vikings’ Kyler Murray-J.J. McCarthy QB Competition
The Minnesota Vikings are hoping improved quarterback play will help them take the next step after a disappointing 2025 season. While Sam Darnold went on to win a Super Bowl with the Seattle Seahawks following his departure, Minnesota finished 9-8 in the competitive NFC North, with injuries and inconsistency under center limiting the team’s postseason hopes.
As the Vikings prepare for the new season, the quarterback battle between veteran Kyler Murray and former first-round pick J.J. McCarthy remains one of the team’s biggest storylines.
Head coach Kevin O’Connell recently shared his thoughts on the competition, emphasizing that the focus isn’t on naming a winner but on raising the standard across the position.
“Our goal this offseason was to improve the quarterback room because when we get the level of play we expect, we believe we have multiple players capable of reaching that standard, and that’s when the Minnesota Vikings win football games,” O’Connell said during an appearance on The Dan Patrick Show. “The best way to accomplish that is by creating competition every day and having those guys challenge each other.”
O’Connell’s comments reflect his confidence that internal competition will ultimately benefit the team. With Murray expected to open the season as the starter and McCarthy continuing his development, the Vikings believe both quarterbacks can push one another while strengthening one of the roster’s most important positions.
If Minnesota receives consistent production under center, O’Connell believes the team will be in a much stronger position to contend in 2026.
