Patriots Sign Rookie Edge Rusher Gabe Jacas to Four-Year Deal

The New England Patriots have officially signed rookie edge rusher Gabe Jacas to a four-year contract worth $8.6 million, according to Bleacher Report’s Jordan Schultz on Saturday.

Jacas was the final unsigned rookie from New England’s 2025 draft class. After a standout college career at Illinois, he joins the Patriots with the expectation of strengthening a pass rush that has struggled to generate consistent pressure in recent seasons.

With his contract now finalized, Jacas can put an eventful offseason behind him and begin preparing for his rookie campaign.

Eventful Offseason Ends with New Contract

The Patriots selected Jacas with the 55th overall pick in the second round after trading up three spots with the Los Angeles Chargers to secure him.

However, his transition to the NFL was anything but straightforward. During rookie minicamp, Jacas was limited to watching from the sidelines because he had not been medically cleared to participate. Around that time, the Patriots declined to offer him the standard participation agreement, which typically provides financial protection for unsigned rookies who suffer injuries during offseason workouts. Reports indicated the team’s decision stemmed from an undisclosed procedure performed on Jacas’ left knee before the draft.

Negotiations continued into June, leading Jacas to miss mandatory minicamp while both sides worked toward an agreement. The uncertainty remained through the start of training camp discussions, although head coach Mike Vrabel expressed confidence on Friday that the rookie would eventually report, without offering a specific timeline.

That uncertainty came to an end once both sides agreed to terms.

What Jacas Adds to New England’s Defense

Jacas arrives in New England with an impressive collegiate résumé. Across 50 games at Illinois, he totaled 183 tackles, 27 sacks, and seven forced fumbles, establishing himself as one of the program’s most productive defensive players.

His final college season was especially dominant, as he recorded 43 tackles, 13.5 tackles for loss, and 11 sacks. He also led Illinois in sacks and tackles for loss during his junior season, demonstrating consistent production throughout his career.

Jacas made an immediate impact as a freshman in 2022, finishing with 35 tackles and four sacks while earning Freshman All-American honors.

The Patriots hope his pass-rushing ability will translate quickly to the NFL. With New England seeking more production off the edge, Jacas has an opportunity to compete for meaningful playing time as a rookie. If he adapts well to the professional game, he could become an important piece of the Patriots’ defensive front and help improve a unit that has lacked consistent pressure in recent years.
