Evan Gold is officially joining the New York Islanders organization, taking on a pair of key leadership positions.
The Islanders announced Monday that Gold has been hired as an assistant general manager under Mathieu Darche. His appointment came just days after his contract with the Boston Bruins expired on Aug. 1. In addition to his front-office role with the NHL club, Gold will also serve as general manager of the Hamilton Hammers, New York’s American Hockey League affiliate.
Stefen Rosner of NHL.com first reported the move before it became official, providing an early look at how the hiring would reshape the Islanders’ front office.
With Gold taking over as general manager of the Hamilton Hammers, Chris Lamoriello will transition into a new role focused on player personnel and the organization’s scouting operations, marking a notable shift in New York’s hockey operations structure.
Darche explained what made Gold the right fit for the Islanders’ front office in the team’s official announcement.
“Evan brings a rare combination of experience, intelligence, and results to our Hockey Operations department. Over the past several years, he has excelled in nearly every facet of building a successful franchise at the NHL and AHL levels, from contract negotiations and cap management to leading the Providence Bruins to the best record in the AHL this past season.”
Gold joins the Islanders after spending 11 years with the Boston Bruins organization. Following a front-office shakeup in Boston this summer, his tenure came to an end. He originally joined the Bruins in 2015 as director of legal affairs for hockey operations after earning his law degree from McGill University. He was promoted to assistant general manager in 2019 before taking over as general manager of the Providence Bruins in 2023.
Gold also expressed his excitement about joining the Islanders organization.
“I am incredibly grateful to Mathieu and the entire Islanders ownership group for the opportunity to be part of such a respected franchise and to help build a Stanley Cup champion on Long Island.”
Before accepting the Islanders’ offer, Gold was considered for general manager vacancies with both the Vancouver Canucks and Toronto Maple Leafs. Although those organizations hired other candidates, New York landed him as an assistant general manager, where he will work alongside Chris Lamoriello, Ryan Bowness, and Steve Pellegrini on responsibilities that include contract negotiations, salary cap management, and scouting.
His appointment as general manager of the Hamilton Hammers also carries significant importance. Gold guided Providence to the AHL’s best regular-season record last year, and he now takes over a newly established affiliate following the organization’s move from Bridgeport to Hamilton.
Several of the Islanders’ top prospects—including Victor Eklund, Cole Eiserman, Kashawn Aitcheson, and Quinn Finley—are expected to begin their professional development in the coming years, placing Gold in a key role overseeing their progression through the organization’s pipeline.
