Texas Tech officially opens fall camp on Wednesday, and one of the program’s biggest storylines once again centers around defensive coordinator Shiel Wood.
After orchestrating one of the nation’s top defensive turnarounds in 2025, Wood enters the new season with lofty expectations. The Red Raiders surrendered just 11.8 points and 258.3 total yards per game last season, a dramatic improvement from the previous year when the defense gave up 34.8 points and 460.2 yards per contest. His work earned him recognition as a finalist for the Broyles Award, presented annually to college football’s top assistant coach.
Although Texas Tech must replace several key contributors from last year’s defense, the Red Raiders also return a talented core and aggressively strengthened the roster through the transfer portal. If the defense performs at a similarly high level in 2026, Wood could become one of the hottest head coaching candidates in the country. That possibility was recently reinforced by On3’s Pete Nakos, who included Wood among 27 assistant coaches viewed as strong candidates to land head coaching jobs next offseason.
Wood’s coaching journey began in 2006, and he has steadily built an impressive résumé despite never serving as a head coach. A former wide receiver at Wofford, he transitioned to the defensive side of the ball in 2011 after previously coaching wide receivers from 2007 through 2010. He was later named Wofford’s safeties coach upon returning to the program in 2016 before earning a promotion to defensive coordinator the following season.
Following the 2017 campaign, Wood departed his alma mater to join Georgia Tech’s coaching staff as the Yellow Jackets’ safeties coach, continuing his rise through the college football coaching ranks.
Wood has quickly built an extensive coaching résumé, working at seven different programs over the last eight seasons. After leaving Georgia Tech, he spent time at Georgia State in 2019 before coaching at Army from 2020 through 2021. He then held defensive coordinator roles at Troy in 2022, Tulane in 2023, and Houston in 2024 before Joey McGuire brought him to Texas Tech ahead of the 2025 season to oversee the Red Raiders’ defense.
