Klay Thompson Sets Sights on Miami Heat 3-Point Record After $9.8 Million Sacrifice

Klay Thompson is already setting ambitious targets for his first season with the Miami Heat.

The veteran wing made a significant financial sacrifice to leave the Dallas Mavericks, reportedly giving up $9.8 million through a contract buyout before signing a new deal with Miami worth $6 million.

Now, Thompson appears determined to make an impact in his first season with the Heat, potentially taking on an important supporting role alongside Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo during the 2026-27 campaign.

Thompson Has a Heat Record in His Sights

A recent video shared by the Heat may have provided a glimpse into one of Thompson’s personal goals for the upcoming season.

In the clip, Thompson asks a straightforward question:

“What’s the Miami Heat’s single-season 3PT record?”

That record currently belongs to Duncan Robinson, who knocked down 270 three-pointers during the 2019-20 season. That campaign was ultimately shortened because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Reaching that number would be a significant accomplishment, but Thompson has already demonstrated that he is capable of producing at that level from beyond the arc.

He has surpassed 250 made threes four times during his career, most recently in 2023-24, his final season with the Golden State Warriors.

Thompson made 216 three-pointers in 72 games during his first season in Dallas before connecting on 202 in 69 appearances last season.

Can Thompson Break Robinson’s Record?

If Thompson earns a prominent role as Miami’s perimeter shooting option alongside Antetokounmpo, Robinson’s record could be within reach.

Much of that possibility depends on how effectively Antetokounmpo continues to create open opportunities for his teammates. During his time in Milwaukee, the superstar consistently generated quality looks for shooters with his ability to attack defenses and draw attention.

Thompson’s situation in Dallas was considerably different. He was often the Mavericks’ primary three-point threat, particularly after Luka Doncic was traded, and Dallas lacked a consistent playmaker capable of creating easy perimeter opportunities for him.

Miami could provide Thompson with a much more favorable environment.

If he stays healthy enough to play more than 70 games and establishes himself as a stronger wing option than Tim Hardaway Jr. or Pelle Larsson, Thompson’s elite shooting ability could give him a realistic chance of reaching or even surpassing the 270-three mark.

The bigger challenge, however, may be earning enough playing time to make the attempt possible.

Miami is known for demanding production and rewarding players based on what they provide on the court. Thompson’s reputation as one of the greatest shooters of his generation will not automatically guarantee him a featured role.

If he wants to chase the Heat’s single-season three-point record, Thompson will first have to prove that he deserves the opportunities to do it.
