Shea Langeliers’ Season in Jeopardy After Torn Meniscus
The Athletics have placed All-Star catcher Shea Langeliers on the 10-day injured list after he suffered a torn meniscus in his right knee. The move is retroactive to July 25, and catcher Brian Serven has been called up from Triple-A Las Vegas to take his place on the roster.
According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, Langeliers injured his knee while running the bases during the Athletics’ series against the Minnesota Twins. The injury could keep him out for the rest of the season.
Langeliers is currently weighing whether to undergo surgery. If he opts for the procedure, the expected recovery time is six to eight weeks, which would likely end his 2026 campaign. With the Athletics sitting well outside the playoff picture, the club has little incentive to rush him back for the final weeks of the season, making a return more likely in 2027. More information about his treatment plan is expected soon.
The loss is another setback for an Athletics team that has been hit hard by injuries this year. Brent Rooker already underwent season-ending knee surgery earlier this month, while Zack Gelof remains sidelined with a knee injury. Nick Kurtz recently returned after a brief stint on the injured list, but several other position players and pitchers are still unavailable.
Langeliers had been one of the club’s standout performers in 2026. Across 416 plate appearances, he posted a .263 batting average with a .332 on-base percentage, a .497 slugging percentage, 23 home runs, and a 127 wRC+. He also made significant defensive strides, recording five Defensive Runs Saved after struggling defensively in previous seasons.
His combination of offensive production and improved defense made him one of the league’s top catchers and a key piece of the Athletics’ lineup.
With Langeliers out, Jonah Heim is expected to handle the starting catching duties. Since joining the Athletics from Atlanta in May, Heim has hit .233/.278/.433 with a 92 wRC+, providing solid backup production but falling well short of Langeliers’ impact.
Heim’s status also adds intrigue ahead of the trade deadline. As an impending free agent, he could become a trade candidate if the Athletics decide to acquire future assets instead of keeping him for the remainder of a non-contending season. If Heim is moved, Brian Serven would likely take over as the primary catcher, though the club may need to add another catcher for depth.
Before the injury, Langeliers had been mentioned as a possible, though unlikely, trade candidate due to his team control beyond 2026 and high value. However, the knee injury effectively ends any trade speculation. The Athletics are now expected to focus on his rehabilitation with the goal of having him healthy and ready for the 2027 season.
